The golden age of Spectrum demos occurred after the commercial collapse of the platform in the UK. The machine then found a new home behind the iron curtain, where the simple design and low cost of production meant that clones could be easily produced, filling a niche where more complex (and hence expensive) hardware was unable to compete (e.g. the Amiga and PC). Armed with the additional technology bolted onto machines such as the Pentagon and the Scorpion - and with a decade or more of prior art to draw on - a new generation of Spectrum coders were able to take up the challenge and create productions rivaling those on other, longer established platforms.

The Links section offers some pointers to more information on the Demo scene.

Back in 1998 I went through some 400 demos and rated them all. This list shouldn't be considered complete in any way, shape or form: it's a decade out of date! However, I've sat down, revamped the information and revisited all the high-scoring demos (i.e. a score above 8) to add screen captures and videos for the world to see. Unfortunately, unless there's a huge demand, I'm unlikely to revisit the rest of the existing demos - it's simply too time-consuming (though I may re-attempt some of the failures, given that emulation technology has significantly improved since 1998!).
